The SOURCE (Offshore Groundwater Resources in a Changing Marine Environment: Continental Shelf Surrounding PEI) project is an international multidisciplinary research effort exploring potential offshore freshwater aquifers under the Gulf of St. Lawrence around Prince Edward Island. The project is led by Dalhousie's Earth and Environmental Sciences Department in partnership with several other departments and institutions, with support from the NFSI. Professional videographer Felix Heinzelmann has prepared a brief promotional video describing the project's goals and introducing some of the researchers. You can read more about the project here.

As part of the SOURCE project, NFSI is in the early stages of building a shallow water controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) system that can be towed on the sea surface for similar investigations. As described in the video, CSEM data is used to measure the resistivity/conductivity of the subsurface, which can then be used to interpret physical properties of the rock and pore fluids. We are excited to continue contributing to scientific discovery of the natural world around us.
