The first annual Marine Seismology Workshop is coming up May 22-26, 2023, hosted by the NFSI at Dalhousie University in Halifax, NS. The workshop is also sponsored by the NSERC-CREATE training program iMAGE and NOR-R-AM. We will be welcoming students and researchers from across Canada and around the world to Dalhousie for this inaugural event. We are busy putting the final touches on preparations for the workshop, and very excited to welcome all of the participants for a week of interesting discussion, training, and some fun when the work is done. More detailed information and the workshop program can be found here.
The first two days of the workshop will be primarily lectures and discussion. Participants will receive instruction in all aspects of marine seismology, including lectures from leading Canadian researchers in the field and 2 invited keynote lectures. Our keynote speakers are Juan Pablo Canales from WHOI and Helen Janiszewski from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. NFSI staff will also provide an introduction to the facility and our ocean-bottom seismometer instrumentation. Two days will be devoted to practical sessions demonstrating processing and analysis of ocean-based seismic data, and a field trip to observe deployment and recovery of the NFSI's ocean-bottom seismometers aboard a local vessel (Island Venture I of Baker Blue Ocean). Field trips will depart from Blandford, NS, where the vessel is based, a roughly 1-hour drive from Dalhousie campus. The final day will have participants splitting into groups for a mock proposal writing competition.
Participants will have opportunities to socialize and experience some of the excellent food and scenery that Nova Scotia has to offer. We will have an icebreaker event at Mother's Pizza in Halifax's North End on Sunday, May 21. The restaurant serves excellent Woodstone oven pizza and many local micro-brews. The closing reception Friday evening will be held at the Lightfoot & Wolfville Winery in Wolfville, NS, in the Annapolis Valley. Prior to the reception, there will be time to explore scenic downtown Wolfville, with its many shops and views of the Cornwallis River and Minas Basin.
We're counting down the days until everyone arrives. See you soon!
